Alternative race recovery or a spot of relaxation

IMG_5663 (1)

If like me you are taking part in Run Hackney this weekend, then you might want to think about treating yourself to a relaxing post race float at Floatworks

I am sure you have already heard about the benefits of Epsom Salts to help ease the pain of aching muscles, well times that by 100 as you step into the biggest bath of Epsom Salts ever, imagine how good that’s going to make those aching muscles feel?

When I had a job in the City I used to have monthly floats at the Floatwork studio in London Bridge, at first I was nervous as I suffer from claustrophobia & a fear of water (I  can’t swim), so the  first time I visited I left the tank door open until I relaxed (don’t worry you are always in a private room), I am not entirely sure how my friend convinced me to go for my first float – it was probably the lure of a Groupon offer, but I am glad she did, as with a demanding career my monthly floats soon became a really good way to relax & have some me time, an hour to switch off and unwind

Following a change of ownership & move from London Bridge to Vauxhall, I was really excited to be invited down for a float to celebrate Floatworks relaunch at the start of April, the new studio is situated just a 2 minute walk from Vauxhall Station & is designed to ensure complete tranquility during your visit

When you arrive you are asked to complete a short questionnaire before the float process is explained to you, you are then invited to leave coats, bags shoes etc in a locker & before you are shown to your private room, the rooms are small but adequate, and contain the tank and your own private shower

In the room you are left a towel, some ear plugs and vaseline to cover any cuts or grazes, before you are left to undress/change and enjoy your float session.

As I mentioned in the past I have found the sessions so relaxing I have fallen asleep, I’m one of those people that find it very hard to switch off from daily life, unfortunately this time I was a bit like ‘ohh I wonder if I can snap a quick selfie to share on Instagram’

Post float, you  have a shower, shower gels, shampoo and conditioners are all supplied, before getting dressed and being invited to spend some time in the Floatworks  chill out area, where they offer complimentary juices and green teas, they even have a hair care area complete with hair dryers, straightners

So would I recommend Floatworks, absolutely, I definitely intend to go back myself, I had planned to go after the marathon but unfortunately stairs were not my friend so I couldn’t face the trip into London.

If I were asked for feedback, my suggestions would be a hook somewhere in the room to hang clothes, offer clients two towels, if you have women attending one isn’t enough when you are encouraged to sort your hair out in a room upstairs & maybe a bath pillow, the pillow won’t fit with the luxe feel of Floatworks but for first time floaters who may take a little time to relax these will definitely stop you coming out with neck ache (& on a personal note pack a toiletry bag with deodorant, hairbrush etc to take into the float room, rather than leaving them in your locker and then having to make a dash to the loo to put on deodorant and run a comb through your soaking wet hair)

Want to know a bit more about what floating is and the benefits of it, here’s a snippet I have pinched from the Floatworks website

So what is Floating

Floatation therapy at The Floatworks is the practice of lying back effortlessly in one of our world leading i-sopod floatation tanks and drifting into a blissful, deep, meditative state that rejuvenates and revives your mind and body.

Here comes the technical bit!

Also known as floatation & float therapy, the floatation experience is delivered through a super-saturated Epsom-salt solution, 25cm deep and containing 525kg of magnesium rich Epsom-salts.

Floatation Therapy

The solution is heated to skin temperature (35.5°C) and the environment in the tank is controlled so that the air is also skin temperature. Once you are settled, it is impossible to tell which parts of your body are in the water and which are not.

This creates an environment similar to that of the Dead Sea but without the sensation of temperature or movement, which lets you float effortlessly on the surface of the water, enjoying a feeling of total freedom & weightlessness!

Our Isopod tanks are the best on earth, specifically designed to block out all external distractions including sight, sound, tactile sensations and gravity. This environment brings long lasting and transformational experiences.

Floating has become increasingly popular, as more people have learnt about floatation therapy’s remarkable benefits.

My Nosh 3 Day Juice Fast – Review

I have always been into all things weight loss and have pretty much given every diet out there a try, the one exception was juicing, I love food to much, dieting is hard enough without giving up food completely

However I was tempted, I had been suffering with stomach cramps a lot recently & taking food out of the equation for a few days suddenly seemed tempting & I kept reading about how I’d feel clean inside at the end of the 3 days

This is what Nosh have to say about their Juice Fast

Feel overweight, tired, bloated and run down?

Ready to take control of your health but not sure how to start?

Want to release weight painlessly without feeling hungry?

Need to boost immunity the easiest possible way?

With our super easy Beginners juice fast you will not go hungry while achieving your ultimate goal of weight loss, eliminating bloating and restoring the digestive system.

This juice fast is perfect for first timers and people who like eating!

We have included all the benefits of our Original Nosh Juice Fast with added extras.

My answers were yes, yes, yes!! So when I saw an offer on the Nosh 3 Day Juice Fast through one of these daily deal sites I decided to give it a try especially as before seeing the offer I had already been doing some research about juice detoxes and Nosh was one that kept popping up

My box of goodies arrived quickly and I had decided I was going to give the fast a try the week before a friends wedding (for anyone interested these juices worked out 4pp each so 24pp a day for the 6 juices, so this was never a quick fix option)

I must admit, I dreaded this, did I really want to lose weight that badly that I would consume nothing but juice for 3 day, they all looked the same, so beige and blurgh, totally unappetising, surprisingly I am pleased to say they tasted better than they looked, and I am shocked to say I found the first day easy, I didn’t feel hungry at all in fact fitting in all the juices was actually my problem I felt like I was constantly drinking

Unfortunately though I only managed one full day on the fast, I am not sure whether it was just the problems I have been having with my stomach lately or whether it had something to do with the cleansing powders I had to drink but the next day the cramps in my stomach were back

I have still used my remaining juices but as meal replacements when busy etc or as a snack throughout the day

Would I do another Juice Fast, I honestly thought the answer would be no but I would have liked to have seen how I felt after 3 days, this was never primarily about weight loss and more about that clean feeling and clearing my insides of any nasties that keep causing my cramps (well that went well lol) but I think next time I’d possibly try a DIY version, lookout for a future blog post in January

(one thing I have noticed and makes me more sceptical of the Nosh brand is that when I made my purchase in September, this was referred to as a Juice Cleanse/Detox, now its being called a Juice Fast, jumping on another bandwagon/fad are we Nosh- but then I suppose that’s what help business’s survive & makes gullible consumers like me buy into their products

NB : this review is my own personal opinion, I received no discount when making my purchase and have not received payment for my review

Product Review – Battle Oats Bars

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to be sent some Battle Oats bars to review

I am not normally one for breakfast bars/cereal bars/flapjacks & biscuity kind of things, I want my treats to be real chocolatey naughtiness with absolutely zero nutritional benefits

So unsurprisingly these bars sat in my cupboard for a few weeks, I had even been carrying the Cranberry & Blackberry Fusion bar around in my bag for a few weeks, incase a peckish moment ever came up but as a Weight Watcher I couldn’t quite ever bring myself to justify the 7pp spend on one bar (I could have a Dairy Milk for that!!)

But last Sunday after the Royal Parks Half Marathon feeling utterly drained & unable to satisfy my hunger, i decided to give the Dark Chocolate Chip bar a try.

Advertised as a gluten & wheat free protein bar I was hoping these would satisfy my hunger and my cravings for something sweet but if I’m honest I was expecting to be disappointed but I just didn’t have the energy for a trip to the shops

I couldn’t have been more wrong in my expectations for this bar, it was absolutely delicious, very moist, extremely filling, it had real dark chocolate chunks which you could actually see & taste, basically it was none of the things I feared it would be and everything it promised to be

After enjoying the Dark Chocolate Chip bar so much, I now couldn’t wait to try the Cranberry & Blackberry Fusion bar, suddenly the next morning those 7pp didn’t seem such a bad spend, this bar could work as a breakfast on the go &  it certainly filled me up, but would this bar be as good as the Dark Chocolate bar, I’m a chocoholic after all

Well the answer was a resounding Yes!!

The Cranberry & Blackberry Fusion bar was equally delicious, my only negative on either bars was I found this one slightly crumbly, but that could have been because I carried it around in my bag for over a week but even so the bar had kept it shape and hadn’t crumbled or broken inside the packaging

(I can not say the same for of the many other bars that often find themselves at the bottom of my bag making them less appealing to eat when hunger does finally strike)

So would I buy Battle Oats, most definitely in fact I made a special trip to a local stockist a few days ago to stock up (actually I have another small gripe, now I have tried them I want to be able to buy them easily, and at the moment they are only available to buy online or via a small number of stockists mainly Crossfit studios, these need to become available via places like Holland & Barrett, in my opinion these bars are tastier than the equivalents they are currently selling) & I can not wait to try the new bar they are teasing us with on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram but haven’t yet revealed

Last but not least, the facts

Battle Oats bars are high protein, gluten free, &  they are made from 100% natural ingredients, but I will leave the sales patter to them, here’s what  Battle Oats have to say about their bars

‘Battle Oats are gluten free protein bars made using fine English oats, butter, coconut oil, protein isolate and other 100% natural ingredients. No palm oil!

Battle Oats protein bars are hand made and oven baked in the UK in small batches ensuring freshness and quality.’

NB Even though I was sent these bars to review the opinions are 100% my own and have not been influenced in anyway
